The new Governor of the Central bank of Nigeria, Dr Yemi Cardoso has assured Nigerians that under his watch, the apex bank cannot be hijacked. The new CBN chief made this promise while answering question at the upper legislative chamber of the National Assembly when he was asked by the Senate president, Godswill Akpabio on how he was planning to run the apex bank when given the opportunity.
Cardoso said that he and his deputies will not be distracted by politicians to hijack the CBN from their dictate as speculated in the past administration where politicians were alleged to have been dictating to the CBN.
Cardoso and four others were nominated by President Bola Tinubu to fill-in the principal offices of the apex bank appeared before the Red Chamber today, Tuesday 26th Sept to answer some questions.
Responding to Akpabio’s question, Cardoso said, “It is important that we, who are considered for this position today, understand that this is a position of trust.
“With that comes a huge responsibility to meet up with that trust. I know that a lot of time and effort has gone into choosing the people who are standing here for nomination today.
“As far as I am concerned, under my leadership, we will not be hijacked by anybody. The idea is to ensure that we do what is right, when it is right, and how it is right. We’ve seen what the effect of not doing right has been, and we do not intend for that to be repeated.”
Cardoso and his deputies were later confirmed as the CBN governor and Deputies on the floor of the country’s upper legislative arm.
The Deputies confirmed comprises of Mrs. Emem Nnana Usoro, Mr. Muhammad Sani Abdullahi Dattijo, Mr. Philip Ikeazor, and Dr. Bala M. Bello.
There were allegations that his predecessor, Godwin Emifele came under the influence of the so-called cabal in the last administration that sent the Nigeria economy into shamble.
