President Buhari said yesterday he was committed to the Nigerian oil sector reform, he disclosed he is ready to assent to the Petroleum Industry Governance Bill (PIGB) as soon as the National Assembly pass it to him for assent. Mr, President who made this declaration at the 40th anniversary of the National Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG), in Abuja.

He revealed eventually the bill becomes law it will address most the challenges bedevilling the oil and gas sector.


However, Buhari appealed to workers within the oil and gas industry to support his administration to deliver on his promise of reforming the oil and gas sector.


Represented by the Minister of Labour and Employment, Sen. Chris Ngige, Buhari enjoined workers to support his government to ensure their welfare is been catered for. While commending the workers for the progress achieved so far in the sector, Buhari suggested for dialogue as an alternative to their usual practice of shutting down the system when there is dispute to be resolved with their employers.


Ngige disclosed, Mr President asked me to congratulate you on your landmark achievement of celebrating your 40 years of existence. He added President Buhari is a worker friendly leader who is concern about the welfare of his workers.
“He is a respecter of rule of law and has promised to sign the Petroleum industry bill as soon as the National Assembly passes it to him.


Speaking earlier, NUPENG president, Williams Akporeha lamented about the attitude of oil companies of being interested in casualisation of workers which he revealed is telling on its members, however promised to remain steadfast to fight for better working condition for his members.


He added, the numerous challenges confronting the union especially those regarding its employers, government and general public perception of our vast influence, this has scared many into relating with them.
In the light of this realisation, the union will embark on public image making into negotiation with aggrieved stakeholders.
