Corruption Prevalence Dropped In 2019 – NBS

The National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) has disclosed today Friday that they have recorded drop in corruption prevalence cases in 2019. This revelation was contained in a report titled “corruption in Nigeria: Patterns and Trend 2019”, released in Abuja today.

 

The report revealed that amongst the Nigerian citizens who at least have one contact with a public official in the last 12 months prior to the 2019 survey. It was observed that 30.2 percent paid a bribe to , or was asked to grease a palm by a public official.

 

The report added that though bribery in public office is still high, but its prevalence had dropped considerably, statistically it has dropped from 32.3 percent as it was recorded in year 2016.

 

The report further unveiled that when the six geo-political zones of Nigeria were taken into consideration, North-East, North-West and South-west has recorded significant decrease in the prevalence of bribery index from year 2016.

 

According to the NBS, the North-west especially is witnessing a significant decrease in the prevalence of bribery from 36 percent to 25 percent in the last one year.

 

However, the statistical record by contrast indicated that the prevalence in the other zones of the country instead have increased, zones like the North-central, South-East and South-south, has witnessed increased contrary to their other region counterpart.

 

Although, the prevalence of bribery has reduced but the frequency has remained unchanged.

 

The NBS said, “Although, a smaller percentage of Nigerians that had contact with public officials paid bribes or were asked to pay bribes, those who did pay bribes continue to do so quite frequency.

 

“In 2019, Nigerian bribe-payers paid an average of six bribes in the 12 months prior to the survey, or one bribe every two months which is virtually the same as the average of 5.8 bribes paid per bribe-payers in 2016.

 

Consequently, it is estimated that about 117 million bribes are being committed in Nigeria on annual basis which is equivalent to 1.1 bribes per-adult, the NBS added.

 

The report indicated that the 2019 survey showed a notable increase in the number of Nigerians who came in contact with public officials since 2016 from 52 to 63 per cent.

 

Therefore, the NBS said the record has shown a significant improvement in this year 2019.
