The Ministry of Power has disclosed that over two thousand mega watts of electricity generated by the various Generation Companies (Gencos) were not distributed to consumers. The Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Power, Louis Edozie made this known on Monday while making a presentation at the Opening ceremony of the 3rd National Council on Power (NACOP), held in Jos, the Plateau state capital.

He blamed the development on inadequate distribution lines and distribution sub-stations.

According to him “The national grid produces about 6,600 mega-watts of electricity from the 750,33KV trading points, but less than 4,600 mega-watts ‎get distributed to the consumers. Most of the Distribution Companies (DISCOs) do not have adequate distribution lines and distribution sub-stations; we have discussed the need to acquire more of these facilities so as to boost supply to customers,” he said.

The Permanent Secretary who lamented that all Discos operating in the country were cash-strapped due to refusal by consumers to pay their electricity bill, noted that it would require huge funds to procure distribution lines and address other challenges confronting the sector.

News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the meeting, which commenced on Monday, Sept. 18, will be concluded on Sept. 22. Meanwhile, Babatunde Fashola, Minister for Power, Works and Housing, is expected to feature as one of the key speakers.
