The Nigeria Customs Service (NSC), Sokoto Area Command says it has intercepted about 506 bags of smuggled rice with a duty paid value worth over N12.127 million. The Area Comptroller in charge of the Command, Nasir Ahmed stated this on Wednesday while briefing newsmen. He disclosed that that interception followed an intelligence report from his officers.

Nasir further told newsmen that the smuggled bags of rice were concealed inside sacks of beans, stressing that his men had been on the trail of the trailer for about two weeks. He assured that the command had upped its game and would continue to expose tricks by smugglers.

"But whatever tricks they used, we are here to combat them. The ban on rice importation through the land border is still enforced and it is meant to encourage local production of rice. Smugglers should resign and go back to farm. We will continue to support local production of rice by stopping importation.”

He also appealed to the general public to furnish the command with information to assist his operatives in their operations.
