In what appears to be a giant fight on corruption, on Monday 1st July 2019 Federal High Court sitting in Lagos granted the Federal Government of Nigeria permanent forfeiture of the sum of $8.4 million and N9.2 billion, respectively traced to the accounts of President Goodluck Jonathan's wife, Patience.
Delivering the judgment, Justice Mojisola Olatoregun held that the money is reasonably suspected to be proceeds of crime.
She granted an application by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) that the money should be permanently forfeited.
Also, the judge ruled that Mrs Jonathan could not prove beyond a reasonable doubt that the whopping sum was legitimately earned.
According to the EFCC, the respondents were not into any legitimate income-yielding business venture to earn such amounts.
It further alleged that the firms were incorporated for the purpose of warehousing proceeds of unlawful activities for Patience.
More so, the depositors into these accounts as opined by the prosecutors are the domestic staff of State House, Abuja, who were procured by the Dudafa Waripamo-Owei (Jonathan’s Special Assistant on Domestic and Household Matters) to deposit the funds sought to be forfeited in a bid to conceal the true origin of the funds.
