Nigeria’s Dr Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala has been appointed as the first-ever woman to lead the World Trade Organisation (WTO). The 66-year-old Okonjo-Iweala tenure as head of the Switzerland-based institution will start on the 1st of March 2021.

The former Nigerian minister of finance was confirmed DG of the trade body in a statement by the WTO on Monday which reads "Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala from Nigeria is appointed as the next WTO Director-General. Dr Okonjo-Iweala makes history as the first woman and the first African to lead the WTO. Her term starts on the 1st of March 2021.”

After the withdrawal of South Korean Trade Minister, Yoo Myung-hee, and endorsement by the United States government, it became evident that the former World Bank executive would likely clinch the post.
