An early morning fire on Sunday engulfed the popular Monday Market in Maiduguri, Borno State, destroying properties worth millions of naira. Eyewitnesses suggest that the fire started at around 2 am on Sunday morning and no life was recorded lost as a result of the tragic incident.
According to reports, the governor of Borno State, Prof. Babagana Zulum visited the scene to conduct an on-the-spot assessment but was pelted with stones by angry traders, despite the tight security accompanying him.
Zulum has announced an emergency relief of N1 billion as urgent support to victims of the fire.
