The Association of Licensed Telecoms Operators of Nigeria (ALTON) has announced that telecommunications providers have commenced the harmonization of short codes across all networks. This was made known on Tuesday by the ALTON Chairman, Gbenga Adebayo, adding that the development is in line with the regulatory modernization initiative of the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC).

He said, “Following the directive from the NCC, the Association hereby informs the general public that the network operators have begun implementing the shortcodes, working closely with the NCC.

“The Commission has provided adequate time for subscribers to get used to this new development. We are confident this will enhance customer experience across networks.”

He further said that the migration would be concluded by May 17, 2023, with old and new common codes running concurrently, after which the old codes would cease to operate.

Each telecom provider has its own unique code for recharging, checking balance, etc, however, the harmonization of short codes ensures that the shortcodes are uniform across all networks.

The proposed harmonized shortcodes are; Call Center/Help Desk – 300, Voice Mail Deposit – 301, Voice Mail Retrieval – 302, Borrow Services – 303, STOP Services – 304, Check Balance – 310, Credit Recharge – 311, Data Plan – 312, Data Plan Balance – 323, Verification of SIM Registration/NIN-SIM Linkage- 996, amongst others.
