American Television Actor, Jussie Smollett has on Tuesday been indicted on six new charges for disorderly conduct and lying to the police over an alleged racist and homophobic attack in Illinois, Chicago last year.

A special prosecutor, Mr Dan Webb assigned to the case in August has indicted Smollett saying " making four separate false reports to Chicago Police Department officers related to his false claims that he was the victim of a hate crime, knowing that he was not the victim of a crime."

"Jussie Smollett planned and participated in a staged hate crime attack, and thereafter made numerous false statements to Chicago Police Department officers on multiple occasions, reporting a heinous hate crime that he, in fact, knew had not occurred," Webb added.

According to the Empire actor, he was attacked by two adult males who punched him, wrapped a rope around his neck and poured an "unknown chemical substance" on him.

He also noted that the attackers made references to President Donald Trump's Make America Great Again (MAGA) slogan, indicating their support for the President.

In February, he was arrested and accused of paying two brothers to carry out the attack as a publicity stunt to promote his career.

He was later arraigned in court in March, where all charges against him were dropped.

The issue attracted world publicity with fellow Empire cast and other celebrities sending love and support to the actor.

The Chicago police said investigations into the matter would continue to uncover the true picture of what happened.

Smollett is slated to appear in court on February 24, 2020.

The city of Chicago is also suing for over $130,000 for payment of police officers who worked overtime investing his claims.

However, the actor has filed a countersuit.
