A footage has emerged which shows the late rapper, AKA sprawled on the street after being riddled with bullets in a drive-by shooting in Durban, South Africa. Prior to his death, the rapper whose real name was Kiernan Forbes, and who is said to be one of SA’s leading rappers was said to have flown into Durban from his Johannesburg residence for his birthday party on Friday which was planned to hold at Yugo Nightclub. It was learned that the fatal shooting had occurred after he posted about it on his social media pages and had invited fans to show up for the event. AKA was killed along with his close friend, the chef and entrepreneur Tebello 'Tibz' Motsoane.

Police spokesperson Colonel Robert Netshiunda has told the BBC that the rapper and his friend were walking to their car when they were approached by two armed men who shot them at close range.

The assailants then fled the scene on foot.

Police have said they do not want to speculate on whether the murders were a result of a hit but said that possibility cannot be ruled out.

Hours before his death, the 35-year-old posted on social media about his upcoming album, Mass Country, which is set for release later this month.

Born January 1988 and raised in Cape Town, AKA gained recognition after releasing his single “Victory Lap” from his debut studio album, Altar Ego (2010).

He exceled in his music career with many collaborative hit songs and nominations to his name.

His family in an emotional statement signed by Tony and Lynn Forbes, confirmed AKA’s death, asking to be kept in prayers.

“It is with extreme sadness that we acknowledge the passing of our beloved son, and confirm his untimely and tragic passing on the evening or February 10, 2023. We are awaiting further details from Durban police.

“To us, Kiernan Jarryd Forbes was a son, brother, grandson, nephew, cousin and friend, most importantly father to his beloved daughter Kairo.

“To many, he was AKA, Supa Mega, Bhova and the many other names of affection his legion of fans called him by.”

“Our son was loved and he gave love in return. In this time of grief we appeal for your compassion, space and time to congregate as family to decide on the upcoming days. We thank you for the love and support we have received thus far, and ask you to continue to keep us in your prayers and uplifted in the Lord,” the family said in the Saturday statement.
