The much-anticipated, Marvel’s Black Panther world premiere held on Monday night at Dolby Theatre in Hollywood, US. The movie will be hitting local cinemas on 16 February. The film will is also scheduled for a cross-nation release in Africa, a first for a Disney film. Black Panther is a marvel T’Challa is king of Wakanda and returns home to find his sovereignty challenged by two long-time adversaries. Their conflict reaches global proportions.

Legendary South African actor, John Kani stars as T’Chaka, T’Challa’s father and his son, Atandwa Kani, plays a young T’Chaka in the film in flashback scenes. Connie Chiume, best known for her role as Mamokete in Rhythm City, plays the role of Mining Tribe Elder. The film contains scenes in Wakandian, actually isiXhosa, taught to Chadwick Boseman by John Kani.

 

Black Panther also stars Michael B. Jordan, Lupita Nyong'o, Danai Gurira, Martin Freeman, Daniel Kaluuya, Letitia Wright, Winston Duke, Angela Bassett, Forest Whitaker and Andy Serkis.

 

Initial reactions have rather unanimously pitched Black Panther as a runaway success with those fortunate to have attended the premiere praising the film as one of Marvel's greatest films to date.

 

Black Panther is breaking Marvel records before it's even released “Yes this will be the Blackest movie of all time,” one viewer raved in reference to the film's cast - also including Michael B. Jordan, Danai Gurira and Letitia Wright - which is the first black ensemble to lead a film of this size. Another praised the film for its “gorgeous and beautiful” focus on black women.

 

Much praise went to Coogler's depiction of fictional country Wakanda while Jordan's villain Erik Kilmonger has been branded the best since Loki.

 

Black Panther - which is expected to signal the start of the MCU's long-mooted second phase - will be released in the UK on 12 February. Its US release arrives a week later (18 February). Reviews are embargoed until 6 February.
