The halt in activities in Hollywood and the global entertainment industry due to the COVID-19 global pandemic, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, popularly known as Oscars has announced that the 93rd Oscar awards have been postponed from the initial date of 28 February 2021 to April 25, 2021.

The Academy President David Rubin and CEO Dawn Hudson in a joint statement said: " Our hope, in extending the eligibility period and our Awards date, is to provide the flexibility filmmakers need to finish and release their films without being penalized for something beyond anyone’s control."

The global film awards body announced in April that it would allow films and movies that were only able to be streamed on commercial streaming platforms to participate in the awards. Prior to the pandemic, movies had to have a theatrical run, premiers in theatres and cinemas to participate in the ceremony.

Also, the Academy's Governors Awards, a non televised award ceremony would not take place as scheduled. Information and updates on the honourees selection and other related matters would be communicated.
