Namibia’s President Dies Aged 82, Tinubu Extends Condolences

Namibia's President Hage Geingob has died at the age of 82 while receiving medical treatment at a hospital in the capital, Windhoek. According to his office, the country's independence struggle veteran died on Sunday at Lady Pohamba Hospital after a prolonged fight with cancer. While receiving the shocking news, world leaders including Nigeria’s President have extended their condolences. Vice-President Nangolo Mbumba who is now in acting capacity according to the country's constitution disclosed in a statement that "The Namibian nation has lost a distinguished servant of the people, a liberation struggle icon, the chief architect of our constitution and the pillar of the Namibian house.

Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger Republics Dumps ECOWAS Membership

Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger Republics has expressed their decision of severing every ties with Economic Community of West Africa, ECOWAS, and therefore no longer a members. The three West African countries jointly made their decision to dump the regional government known this afternoon. Their statement during the pronouncement reads, “After 49 years, the valiant people of Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger regretfully and with great disappointment observe that the ECOWAS organization has drifted from the ideals of its founding fathers and the spirit of the pan-Africans”

Niger Coup: Junta Leaders Releases Bazoum’s Wife, Children From Custody

The military junta in Niger Republic has released the wife and son of ousted President Mohamed Bazoum from house arrest after spending months of restriction. Bazoum’s family were placed under house arrest since the coup that toppled their father’s government on July 26, 2023, lead by the National Council for the Safeguard of Homeland, the ruling military junta in Niger. The Nigeria’s Foreign Affairs Minister, Yusuf Tuggar, made this known today while commending the junta for the development. 

Illegal Mining Rubbing Nigeria 90% of The Sector’s Required Revenue – ECOWAS Envoy

The Speaker of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Parliament, Dr Mohamed Sidie Tunis, has disclosed that Nigeria loses 91 per cent of its supposed revenue from the mining sector to illegal miners. Tunis was making this statement during an opening of a three-day seminar organised by the Parliament on “Illegal mining and its implications in the ECOWAS Region.” According to the speaker, a staggering 80% of mining in the country’s northwest region is being conducted illegally by criminals, draining the nation 91% of its potential mining revenue.

Ex-Sierra Leone President Koroma To Move To Nigeria On Asylum 

Controversy yesterday trailed plans by the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) to relocate former Sierra Leone President, Ernest Bai Koroma, to Nigeria. Koroma who was found culpable following investigations into a botched coup d’etat in his country will spent time in Nigeria on political asylum. In a letter yesterday, the ECOWAS Commission President, Omar Alieu Touray, indicated that the move to relocate Koroma followed an agreement reached by an ECOWAS Mission to Freetown on December 23. The high-level delegation was led by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo of the Republic of Ghana and Macky Sail of Senegal.
