The Somali capital has been rocked by two blasts, with eyewitnesses reporting huge clouds of smoke rising above the city. Police say several people have died and been injured in the explosions.

No group has claimed responsibility for the attack but Al Shabab, an Al Qaeda affiliate, regularly conducts attacks in the country.

The car bomb detonated in the city center of Mogadishu on Saturday, causing huge clouds of smoke to rise above the city, followed by a second explosion nearby.

"A suicide car bomb exploded at a checkpoint near the national theatre. We have no casualties details now," police official Ahmed Abdi told Reuters.

A Reuters witness said a second blast went off near the scene of the first one. The checkpoint is also about 400 metres away from the president's residence
