Following the devastating Cyclone Idai storm in Mozambique and parts of Zimbabwe and Malawi, there have been recorded cases of cholera and Malaria, BBC reports. The storm of March 14, 2019, which hit the city of Beira with up to 170 km per hour of wind, killing over 400 people across the three countries.
About 1.7 million people have been affected by the disaster, making it difficult to access basic needs like drinkable water and electricity. However, humanitarian workers are making efforts to deliver relief materials but the extreme inaccessible areas and scarcity of helicopters are the major challenges faced.
In a statement, the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) said: "Already, some cholera cases have been reported in Beira along with an increasing number of malaria infections among people trapped by the flooding."
The United Nations (UN) has released $20 million to aid the affected countries, while International support from other countries is needed.
