The President of South Africa Cyril Ramaphosa has won his reelection bid under the African National Congress (ANC) with 57.7%, while the nearest challenger Democratic Alliance (DA) picked up 20.76% and the leftist Economic Freedom Fighters garnered 10.79% vote.

In South Africa elections, the president and parliament are not elected directly. Also, The number of votes won by each party determines how many representatives are sent to the national 400-seat legislature. The president of the country is the leader of the party that gets the most votes.

The ANC, which has led South Africa’s government since the fall of apartheid in 1994, was expected to prevail in the elections. But corruption and the country’s stagnant economy tested the party’s standing.

Wednesday election was won slightly with more than 57 per cent of the vote. This will be the first time in 25 years the party has failed to win at least 60 per cent in national elections. Even though ANC has prevailed in this election, going forward, parties like DA and the Economic Freedom Fighters may likely depose ANC in future elections.
