Former ECOWAS President dies at 65

The immediate past president of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), Alain Marcel de Souza was reported dead on Tuesday in Paris after suffering a heart attack. His death has also been confirmed by a staff of the ECOWAS Commission in Abuja.

 

De Souza who died at 65 was a banker and Minister of Economic Development. He was also into politics and had been in the presidential race in 2016.

 

Marcel A. de Souza was appointed by Benin to occupy the position of President of the regional organization’s Commission allocated to Benin by the 48th Ordinary Session of the Authority of ECOWAS Heads of State and Government held on December 2015 in Abuja, Nigeria for the period covering March 2016 to February 2018.

 

De Souza took over from Kadré Désiré Ouédraogo on 8 April 2016. (NAN)
