The Federal Government, on Monday, vowed to take “definitive measures” against the South African government following persistent attacks on Nigerian businesses in South Africa.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Geoffrey Onyeama, made the position of the government known on his official Twitter handle @GeoffreyOnyeama while reacting to the latest attacks on individuals and businesses owned by foreign nationals in South Africa.

The minister did not specifically mention the measures the federal government would take against those he called “mindless criminals”.

He blamed the persistent attacks on Nigerians on “ineffective police protection.”

“Received sickening and depressing news of continued burning and looting of Nigerian shops and premises in #SouthAfrica by mindless criminals with ineffective police protection. Enough is enough. We will take definitive measures”.

Vanguard reports that Properties and businesses belonging to foreign nationals worth millions of Naira were looted and burned in the past week at different locations in Pretoria and Johannesburg.

The government of South Africa had threatened a crackdown but has so far been unable to prevent acts of violence. On Aug. 28, President Muhammadu Buhari and his South African Counterpart Cyril Ramaphosa met on the sidelines of a Summit in Japan and both leaders agreed to meet in October. This latest development indicates xenophobia will be top of the agenda when both leaders meet.
