Former Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak, who ruled Egypt for 30 years, died on Tuesday at the age of 91 after undergoing treatment in intensive care following surgery.

The news of his demise was disclosed by his son Alaa through a Twitter post. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu also expressed "deep sorrow for the passing of my personal friend Hosni Mubarak."

"On behalf of the citizens of Israel, I want to express deep sorrow for the passing of my personal friend, Hosni Mubarak. I wish to send condolences to President [Abdel Fattah al-Sisi] and the Mubarak family," Netanyahu said.

Mubarak spent three decades in office before a popular uprising swept Egypt in 2011. He was found guilty of complicity in the killing of protesters during the revolution. That conviction was overturned and was freed in March 2017. The former president has however long maintained his innocence and said history would judge him a patriot who served his country selflessly.

The former air force officer will be buried in a military funeral but the timing was still unclear.
