Guinea Bissau president Cipriano Cassamá has tendered his resignation a day after being sworn in. Cipriano who was appointed by parliament said his life was in danger.

Mr Cassamá, although not being in the December ballot but was among the two men declared president of Guinea-Bissau, the other person being former army general Umaro Cissoko Embaló who had already been sworn in as president at a hotel in the capital, Bissau.

President Cipriano Cassamá of the PAIGC party before resigning told reporters that "I have no security... My life is in danger, the life of my family is in danger, the life of the people is in danger. I cannot accept that that is why I took this decision."

The former Portuguese colony in West Africa has had nine coups or attempted coups since 1980. Despite the resignation of Cassamá, the country still has two rival prime ministers and awaits court ruling to bring an end to all uncertainties.
