The World Health Organisation (WHO) has called on African countries to prepare for a worst-case scenario as the COVID-19 is gradually increasing in the continent.
As it were, about 233 cases have been recorded on the African continent though it is the least affected continent, its leaders have to step up their containment measures on the Pandemic.
Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, WHO Director-General, made this statement while speaking to journalists in a virtual news conference on Wednesday, saying Africa needs to wake up as official numbers of COVID-19 cases may not be the true picture of what is obtainable.
Yesterday, Nigeria recorded five additional cases making it to eight positive cases so far of the coronavirus.
The Nigerian government had yesterday placed a travel ban against 13 countries with a high risk of the outbreak to safeguards Nigerians from further contracting the disease.
Tedros warned that numbers of positive cases could jump up more quickly than we can think if care is not taken.
The World, WHO leader added, “Till date, more than 200,000 people have been and more than 8,000 killed with Africa as the least affected.
“Africa should wake up; probably we have undetected cases or unreported cases he said.
According to him, the 233 could look small when compared to realities in other climes but warned that it could jump up more than it is expected.
He added, “In other countries, we have seen how the virus actually accelerates after a certain tipping point, so the best advice for Africa is to prepare for the worst and prepare today.
The global health body recommends that public gathering should be discouraged as measures to contain its spread.
