Following the political crisis and protest calling for the resignation of President Ibrahim Boubacar Keita, in Mali, a new government comprising six members has been set up in efforts to proffer solutions to the country's crisis. Some supporters of the President's opposition protested twice in June 2020 demanding Keita's resignation over corruption allegations, insecurity, and plunging economy. The opposition is aggrieved after the decision of the Constitutional Court to overturn the results of the election which made Keita's party get re-elected.
The protest against Keita's leadership left at least 11 people dead after protesters clashed with security forces.
Vigil360 reports that President Muhammadu Buhari alongside Former President, Goodluck Ebele Johnathan, Boss Mustapha, Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Babagana Munguno, the National Security Adviser and Ibrahim Gambari, the Chief of Staff attended a virtual meeting on Monday with other Heads of States and Governments of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) to proffer solution to Mali's political crisis.
The ECOWAS meeting ended with the request that all 31 parliamentarians should resign, however, the opposition released a statement saying the resignation of the cabinet members was not enough.
"The M5-RFP states with regret that the conclusions of the Heads of State Summit do not take into account the depth and gravity of the sociopolitical crisis that has Mali's future hanging in the balance," the statement read.
It added that the proposal did not "correspond to the expectations and aspirations of the people of Mali and violate the laws and constitution of Mali", demanding "the resignation of Mr. Ibrahim Boubacar Keita and his regime more than ever."
