Kenya's opposition leader, Raila Odinga who recently lost the Presidential election to Uhuru Kenyatta has called on his supporters to embark on nationwide strike from Monday over the disputed election result. Odinga made the call on Sunday during a mass rally held at Kibera, the largest slum in the capital of Nairobi. He said the move was to protest the alleged stealing of the people's mandate as well as to mourn supporters who were killed by security forces during peaceful protest after the poll.
During the rally, Odinga said "This is a failed regime that is resorting to killing people instead of addressing the real issue. The vote was stolen. There's no secret about that. We had predicted they will steal the election and that's what happened. We are not done yet. We will not give up. Wait for the next course of action which I will announce the day after tomorrow. But for now I want to tell you not to go to work tomorrow Monday."
His call is coming after the United Nations had called for calm.
Kenya National Commission on Human Rights reports that the violent post-election protest that greeted the recently concluded Kenya's presidential election has claimed 24 lives nationwide. The protest started when Odinga's supporters rejected the result of the poll. The electoral body had declared Kenyatta the winner after polling 54% of the votes.
