President Buhari Travels To Ethiopia For AU Summit

President Muhammadu Buhari departed Abuja on Thursday for Addis Ababa, Ethiopia to participate in the 36th Ordinary Session of the Assembly of the African Union (AU) with the theme “Acceleration of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) Implementation.” This was revealed by President Buhari’s spokesperson, Garba Shehu on Wednesday, adding that President Buhari would participate in high-level meetings on peace and security, climate change, and the political situation in some West African countries.


The first meeting is the Peace and Security Council meeting of Heads of State and Government chaired by Cyril Ramaphosa, the President of South Africa, to discuss the situation in the Easter Democratic Republic of Congo.

The second meeting of the Committee of the Heads of State and Government on Climate Change, currently chaired by Mohamed Bazoum, the President of Niger Republic while President Buhari would also attend an extraordinary summit of the Authority of Heads of State and Government of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).

Shehu said, “The Nigerian leader will deliver remarks at these events as well as present his National Statement at the opening session of the Summit, which brings together leaders from the AU member countries as well as a number of non-AU countries and international institutions accredited to the AU in Addis Ababa.”

President Buhari would be accompanied by top government officials and is expected to return to Abuja on Monday, February 20.
