The United Kingdom (UK) Government has disclosed that efforts were underway to review the country's immigration policy as the country prepares to leave the European Union in March 2019. UK Immigration Minister, Brandon Lewis who made this known in an interview with BBC Radio 4 stated that free movement between the UK and Europe will end as soon as Brexit was activated.
"Free movement of labor ends when we leave the European Union in the spring of 2019. I'll be very clear about that. Obviously, there's a period of negotiation we're going through with the European Union at the moment. But we're very clear that free movement ends. It's part of the four key principles of the European Union. When we leave, it ends"
Relatedly, Home Secretary, Amber Rudd in an article published by Financial Times on Thursday stated that the UK would "keep attracting the brightest and best migrants from around the world. And we must implement a new immigration system after we leave the EU that gives us control and works in all of our interests."
Although the EU is yet to respond to the proposed immigration review, it is envisaged that the decision may affect Brexit negotiation in the coming days.
