An outbreak of Bird flu has on Wednesday, 1st January 2020 been confirmed, after the virus was detected in Turkey in eastern Poland, according to authorities.

Poland, which according to a Eurostat report is Europe’s largest poultry producer, would have to slaughter about 40,000 birds to safe the spread of the avian disease.

Prior to the outbreak, Poland hasn’t had an outbreak of bird flu since 2017.

The President of the Polish Association of Breeders and Poultry Producers, Andrzej Danielak disclosed that three farms might be affected, with up to 350,000 birds within a three-kilometre radius.

According to a press release, the virus is a subtype of the highly pathogenic H5N8 bird flu virus, which also threatens human lives.

“Veterinary services are implementing virus eradication procedures in this situation,” the press release said.

Meanwhile, crisis meetings have been held in efforts to curb the disease from spreading further.
