Three Prime Ministers, three-and-a-half years, dozens of furious protests across the United Kingdom, and seemingly endless votes in Parliament since the 2016 referendum, Uk is officially leaving the European Union at 11:01 p.m. GMT today.

The UK will officially end its 47-year membership of the European Union today and will become the first-ever country to leave the European Union.

This week saw the final debate over the UK's departure from the EU take place in Brussels. After Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) backed the terms of the Brexit agreement.

Despite this, immediate changes will be noticeable immediately as the United Kingdom will enter the transition period that was agreed between the British government and the EU. And the terms of that agreement mean that for the next 11 months, the UK remains an EU member state in all but name.

UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson will address the nation in what can be presumed to be an optimistic message. However, departing from the EU to some (Brexiteers), there will be celebration while for the other half - the 48 percent who voted to remain it is a day of mourning.
