The European Union (EU) has approved the use of Remedesivir to treat severe cases of Coronavirus.
According to a statement made on Friday by EU Health Commissioner, Stella Kyriakides, the authorization of the Remidisivir drug for the treatment of Coronavirus is an important step in the fight against the virus.

“Today’s authorization of the first medicine to treat COVID-19 is an important step forward in the fight against this virus. We are granting this authorization less than a month after the application was submitted, showing clearly the EU’s determination to respond quickly whenever new treatments become available.”

The announcement came days after the US effectively stockpiled the world’s entire supply of the antiviral medication based on its major studies showed that Remedisivir can reduce the duration of hospital stay for COVID-19 patients.

Remedisivir which is the only anti-coronavirus medication to be given green light in the EU was originally intended as a treatment for the Ebola virus.

It was approved in the UK at the end of May, with the health officials outlining that it would only be used to treat patients in critical conditions.

It is one of the drugs approved in Britain to treat COVID-19.

The other is a cheap steroid called dexamethasone.
