Pope Francis presided over the funeral mass of his predecessor, Pope Benedict XVI who died at the age of 95 on December 31, 2022. According to reports, around 50,000 people including top dignitaries were present for the ceremony which was held on Thursday at St. Peter’s Square, Vatican City, Rome.

It was a historic burial ceremony because the deceased, Pope Benedict became the first pope of the Catholic Church to resign in nearly 600 years, while Pope Francis is the first pope in the church’s history to preside over the burial ceremony of his predecessor.

Benedict’s body was then transported to St Peter’s Basilica where it was buried in the tombs along with about 90 previously deceased popes.

Prior to his burial today, Benedict’s body lay in state in St Peter’s Basilica on Monday where his coffin was placed in front of the altar.

Benedict was born in Bavaria, Germany, and was elected pope in April 2005, following the death of his predecessor, Pope John Paul II.

He resigned as the leader of the Catholic church about a decade ago, citing health issues, subsequently, the current pope, Francis was elected as the church’s worldwide leader.
