Former Japanese Prime Minister, Yasuhiro Nakasone has died at the age of 101, NHK television reports. He was widely known for his role in amending the country's post war constitution. Nakasone, who was Japan's 71st Prime minister, was the last living PM who served during the Emperor Showa era of 1926 to 1989.

The former PM was born in 1918 in Gunma Prefecture. He served as a naval officer during World War Two after graduating from the University and later held several cabinet positions before becoming a PM in 1982.

In the 80s he built a strong friendship with United States President Ronald Reagan. Following the announcement of his passing, Japan's current PM, Abe Shinzo expressed sadness on the country's loss, also praising Nakasone's accomplishments.
