Afghanistan's President Ashraf Ghani has on Monday been sworn in for a second term at the presidential palace in Kabul, however, his rival Abdullah Abdullah has refused to acknowledge the inauguration, holding his own swearing-in ceremony as president.

Following a disputed election in September 2019, Ghani and Abdullah both claim to be the rightful leader of Afghanistan.

The development may threaten the peace of the country, especially as the United States and the Taliban signed a withdrawal deal.

According to Reuters, Ghani's inauguration was interrupted by two rockets hitting the edges of the presidential palace, forcing other ceremonies to be halted and postponed.

In his inaugural speech, Ghani said he will establish an open government including members of the opposition in his cabinet but will continue the previous cabinet for two weeks.

"Then we will form an inclusive government after consultation," Ghani said.

U.S special envoy Zalmay Khalilzad tried to secure a peace deal between the two.

"We have been in serious negotiations with the Abdullah team since last night, and it is still underway," an official said.
