Lebanon's Prime Minister, Hassan Diab has on Monday announced his government's resignation following pressure from street protests over the devastating explosion at the Beirut port, killing over 200 people and destroying properties.
In a televised speech, Diab said "I announce the resignation of the government," explaining that his government which assumed office in January had planned to fight the incessant corruption in the country in a bid to "save the country", adding that the corruption in Lebanon had grown so much that it was "bigger than the state" and "a very thick and thorny wall separates us from change; a wall fortified by a class that is resorting to all dirty methods in order to resist and preserve its gains."
"They knew that we pose a threat to them and that the success of this government means a real change in this long-ruling class whose corruption has asphyxiated the country,"
"Today we follow the will of the people in their demand to hold accountable those responsible for the disaster that has been in hiding for seven years, and their desire for real change," Diab added.
Diab's resignation was met with celebration by people and protesters who called for a new government and the end of the Family dynasty in the country.
French Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian said there was a need for a new government that will prove its worth to the people.
"The aspirations expressed by the Lebanese in terms of reforms and governance must be heard," Le Drian said.
