Dubai Deputy Ruler Sheikh Hamdan Dies

The Finance Minister of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Deputy Ruler of Dubai, Sheikh Hamdan bin Rashid Al Maktoum has died at age 75 after months of being unwell and surgery abroad in October.

Dubai’s ruler Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid al-Maktoum announced the death of his brother on Wednesday, saying he bid farewell to “my brother, my support, my lifelong friend.”

In a tweet, UAE’s de facto ruler, Abu Dhabi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Zayed al-Nayhan said “Today we lost one of the UAE’s faithful men after a life rich with giving and true patriotic work.”

According to Dubai Media Office, funeral prayers for the late finance minister will be restricted to family members only due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Meanwhile, Dubai has announced a 10 day mourning period with flags to be flown at half-mast and a three days closure of government institutions in the emirate with effect on Thursday.
