At least 82 people have died and over 100 injured in a hospital fire in Iraq’s capital, Baghdad on Saturday, in the Coronavirus intensive care unit of the hospital. The fire broke out at the Ibn al-Khatib Hospital after oxygen tanks in the COVID-19 unit exploded.

The incident has sparked apprehension in the country’s capital as the civil defence officials said, “the hospital had no fire protection system and false ceilings allowed the flames to spread to highly flammable products”.

Prime Minister Mustafa al-Kadhemi has suspended the country’s Health Minister, Hassan al-Tamimi in response to the fire.

Meanwhile, calls for the sack of al-Tamimi on social media.
