China Eastern Airlines with 132 people on board has crashed into the mountainous region in the Guangxi province of southern China. The Boeing 737 airline was flying from Kunming to Guangzhou when it crashed and caught fire on Monday afternoon but the cause of the crash is still not yet known. According to China’s Civil Aviation Administration, 123 passengers and 9 crew members were on board.
China Eastern Airlines said it had activated emergency mechanism, deployed a working group to the scene of the crash and opened up a special telephone line for emergency assistance to family members of the deceased.
The President of China, Xi Jinping has also directed the country’s emergency services to organize search and rescue operations, identify the cause of the accident and deal with its aftermath.
China’s last recorded major plane accident occurred in 2010 when a plane crashed in foggy weather, killing 42 people on board.
