The incumbent Prime Minister (PM) of Israel, Yair Lapid has congratulated a former PM, Benjamin Netanyahu on his election win before the announcement of the election’s final results. In his congratulatory message, Lapid said, “The State of Israel comes before any political consideration. I wish Netanyahu success, for the sake of the people of Israel and the State of Israel”.

Israel held its fifth election in four years which saw voters decide between Lapid’s alliance of liberals, conservatives and Arab political parties, and Netanyahu’s religious and ultranationalists’ coalition.

Netanyahu, who is Israel’s longest serving PM, was initially elected as the country’s PM from 1996 to 1999, and again from 2009 to 2021 and was recently re-elected for the position while on trial for corruption charges.

Netanyahu formed alliances with far-right parties to win this year’s election, after becoming alienated by many of his usual political allies.
