Palestinian officials have revealed that nine Palestinians, including an elderly woman, have reportedly been killed in an Israeli military raid in the occupied West bank. According to Palestinian health ministry 16 others were injured with live ammunition in the raid on Jenin refugee camp. The ministry also warned that the situation was “critical” in Jenin, with many other people injured and ambulances unable to get to get. Israeli forces launched a large-scale raid and besieged the camp in the early hours with undercover forces, dozens of armoured vehicles and snipers. Armed confrontation with Palestinian resistance fighters soon broke out.
Israel's military released few details, but Israeli media noted it had acted to foil "a major attack" by militants.
The Israeli military said that special forces had been sent into Jenin to detain Islamic Jihad fighters suspected of carrying out and planning “multiple major terror attacks”.
The military added that several Palestinian fighters had been shot after they had opened fire.
“During an attempt to arrest them, the wanted men opened fire and were killed in an exchange of fire with our forces,” the IDF said. Three members of the PIJ cell were killed and a fourth was arrested, according to the military.
The military said the raid against the cell’s hideout apartment in the camp was launched following “accurate intelligence” given to the army by the Shin Bet security agency.
Jenin is among areas of the northern West Bank where Israel has intensified raids over the past year, in an attempt to crack down on growing armed Palestinian resistance.
