The United Nations Secretary General, Antonio Guterres has accused Israel of frustrating a two-state solution and peace deal with the Palestinians. Guterres who stated this on Tuesday after meeting with Palestinian Prime Minister, Rami Hamdallah in the West Bank City of Ramallah, described the continued settlement construction by Israel in the contentious area as illegal.
According to him, "there is no plan B to the two-state solution. A two-state solution, end to occupation, creating conditions to end the suffering of the Palestinian people are the only way to guarantee that peace is established."
The UN Secretary General further urged Israel and Palestine to refrain from actions capable of undermining the peace process.
Guterres' statement is coming a day after Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu vowed not to take out any West Bank settlement. According to him, "we have returned here for good, there will be no more uprooting of settlements in the Land of Israel. Settlements will not be uprooted."
Meanwhile, Guterres has described the settlement as illegal and appealed to Netanyahu not to frustrate efforts to restore peace to the region. "We believe that settlement activity is illegal in the international law and it's an obstacle to peace, we are obviously in a disagreement of what was said.
