Russian President Vladimir Putin is set to host his Iranian and Turkish counterparts at his official residence in the coastal city of Sochi to discuss the Syrian conflict, Al Jazeera has reported. The meeting is billed to place on Wednesday. Prior to the Wednesday meeting, Foreign Ministers of the three countries would on Sunday evening meet in Turkey's resort City of Antalya to perfect arrangement for the meeting.
The planned meeting according to the report is coming few days after Russia, a member of the United Nations Security Council vetoed a United States drafted resolution on extending the mandate of the UN's mission for investigating the use of chemical weapons in Syria, and the Japan-initiated draft on a provisional extension of the mission's mandate.
Frustrated by Russia's position on the matter, United States Ambassador, Nikki Haly accused Russia of frustrating international efforts to deter chemical attacks stressing that the move would place a moral burden on Russia's future dealing in Syria.
"How, then, can we trust Russia's supposed support for peace in Syria? How can anyone take Russia's proposal of political talks in Sochi seriously?" she queried. Meanwhile, President Putin said the choice of the three countries was strategic because they are the guarantors of any settlement and stability in the country.
On what the three leaders will discuss, Turkey's Presidential Spokesman, Ibrahim Kalin said they would discuss progress in reducing violence in the country as well as facilitate unhindered entrance of humanitarian aids to affected population.
