Syrian President, Bashar al-Assad has thanked the President of Russia, Vladimir Putin for the timely intervention in his country stressing that the move rescued the country from destruction. Assad thanked his Russian counterpart when they both met for talks in the Russian Black Sea resort of Sochi on Monday.

A statement issued by Kremlin spokesperson, Dmitry Peskov on Tuesday, suggested that both leaders "discussed the fight against "terrorism" and the possibilities for a political settlement in Syria, which has entered its seventh year of war." The statement hinted that Assad expressed his readiness to hold discussions with parties interested in resolving the conflict.

Peskov also disclosed that Putin commended Assad for his continued cooperation and assured of Russia's commitment to peaceful resolution of all conflicts in Syria.

According to Al Jazeera, Russia, the Syrian government's main ally in the war, has been supporting government forces against what has become a proxy war in the region. Last month, various factions, including the Syrian government and opposition groups, met in Kazakhstan's capital for talks aimed at implementing a lasting ceasefire agreement.

The report added that several international initiatives to end the war have commenced over the years, including an attempt at establishing four "de-escalation zones" across the country, with Russia, Turkey and Iran acting as guarantors.
