The President of Haiti Jovenel Moise has been assassinated in his hometown at Pelerin 5 district of Pentionvilee on Tuesday night as revealed by the country's interim prime minister. The 53-year-old president's wife, Martine Moise, was also shot in the attack that took place around 1 a.m. local time (0500 GMT) and was receiving medical treatment, Interim Prime Minister Claude Joseph said in a statement.
Former Minneapolis police officer, Derek Chauvin have been sentenced to 22 1/2 years in prison after been convicted of murder and manslaughter in the death of George Floyd. The sentencing follows the emotional testimony from Floyd’s family and Chauvin’s mother, along with brief condolences from Chauvin himself, Judge Peter Cahill said the sentence was not based on emotion, sympathy or public opinion.
The United States Justice Department has seized 33 Iranian government-controlled media websites, as well as three of the Iraqi group Kataeb Hezbollah. This was done to counter what was tagged Iranian propaganda and disinformation at a time of simmering tensions between the two countries. Among the 33 websites which were said to have been hosted on US-owned domains included Al-Masirah TV channel of Yemen’s Huthis, Press TV and Al-Alam, owned by the official Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting (IRIB), and carry content that often reflects the views of more hard-line factions in Iran’s leadership.
Former Minneapolis police officer, Derek Chauvin has on Tuesday been convicted for the murder of George Floyd, after a jury at the Minnesota State Court found him guilty on all three counts of murder. The ex-cop who knelt on Floyd’s neck for over nine minutes, causing his death was found guilty of all three charges; second-degree murder, third-degree murder, and manslaughter.
A large-scale rescue operation was continuing at the site of a collapsed condominium block in Miami, where authorities said at least one person was killed, 10 injured, 99 still missing. At least 102 people have now been accounted for, but it is uncertain how many were in the building when it came down. Dozens of survivors have been pulled out of the rubble. As families desperately waiting for news, search teams have been working around the clock and have reported hearing people banging beneath the debris. What caused the 40-year-old building to collapse early on Thursday morning remains unclear, however, an estimated 55 of the 130 apartments were affected. Police have launched a homicide inquiry, according to Sally Heyman, a county commissioner who represents Surfside. Early on Friday, President Joe Biden approved an emergency declaration in the state of Florida and ordered federal assistance to bolster the state and local response efforts. The White House said the move authorized the Department of Homeland Security and Federal Emergency Management Agency (Fema) to coordinate all disaster relief efforts.
