US President, Donald Trump has ordered a total withdrawal of United States troops from Syria. This was following his assertion that the US has “defeated ISIS in Syria”.
According to AFP, President Trump averred that the fight against the Jihadists group was the only reason the US troops were in Syria and since the acclaimed defeat, the withdrawal was imperative.
The report further revealed that there are 2,000 US troops across Syria who have been on a mission to reclaim the Syrian territory from the Islamic State (IS) terrorist group.
However, some US lawmakers have faulted the decision saying it may negatively affect the US-backed Kurdish fighters who have also been fighting against ISIS, a majority of them would stay back in Syria.
According to Democratic Senator Jack Reed, the President’s decision amounted to a "betrayal" of the Kurds that "provides further evidence of President Trump's inability to lead on the world stage."
However, White House spokeswoman, Sarah Sanders opined that the US-led coalition includes dozens of nations who would continue the fight against the jihadists. She added that the victory recorded over ISIS do not necessarily signal the end of the Global Coalition or its campaign in Syria.
