US Senator Bernie Sanders has narrowly won the New Hampshire primary on Tuesday after defeating two moderate rivals, Former United States Vice President Joe Biden and Pete Buttigieg.

The left-wing senator in a night he declared "the beginning of the end" took a tight victory over centrist former mayor Pete Buttigieg, who offered a different Democratic vision in the race to take on President Trump in November.

Former Vice President Joe Biden has long touted his support from minority–and particularly black–voters to demonstrate his electability for the Democratic party's nomination. But the candidate's support has appeared to slide dramatically among all demographics since his fourth-place finish in Iowa last Monday.

Finishing behind Vermont senator Mr Sanders were two moderates - Mr Buttigieg and Minnesota senator Amy Klobuchar, who emerged as a surprise contender by taking third place. Massachusetts senator Elizabeth Warren and Mr Biden - two erstwhile frontrunners - finished in fourth and fifth places. Technology entrepreneur Andrew Yang and Colorado senator Michael Bennet both dropped out of the race.

The race moves next to the Nevada caucuses on 22 February. The candidates will look to post strong performances there and in South Carolina, to show that they can appeal to a more diverse electorate. Then, on Super Tuesday, 3 March, 15 states and territories - with 1,344 delegates - will vote. The field will be whittled down until a final nominee is crowned at the party convention in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, in July.
