The fatal shooting of another African-American man, Rashard Brooks, at the hands of a white Atlanta police officer has not only sparked new waves of protests over the weekend but prompted the resignation of Atlanta Police Chief Erika Shields.
Shields, left the department just a day after the deadly shooting of Brooks by Garrett Rolfe, at a drive-thru restaurant.
Former Assistant Chief Rodney Bryant, who is black, will serve as the city's interim police chief.
In a statement, Shields said:
"I have faith in the mayor, and it is time for the city to move forward and build trust between law enforcement and the communities they serve."
Brooks died while fleeing from two police officers at Wendy's drive-thru parking lot on Friday after officials said he resisted arrest and snatched an officer's taser.
Rolfe, the officer responsible for the shooting of Brooks, has been fired from the force and a second officer involved in the encounter, Devin Brosnan, has been placed on administrative duty.
Following his death, the restaurant where he was shot was set on fire on Saturday.
Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms said she did not believe the shooting was a "justified use of deadly force".
An autopsy found that Brooks suffered two gunshot wounds to his back and he died of organ injuries and blood loss, the Fulton County Medical Examiner said on Sunday.
The manner of death was listed as a homicide.
Thousands of people joined Black Lives Matter protests across the US at the weekend.
This is coming just weeks after protests erupted following the death of another black man, George Floyd, while in the custody of police in Minneapolis.
