Canada has on Friday announced that it has lifted the ban on foreign travellers from Nigeria and nine other countries with effect from December 18, however, reimposing testings following the spread of the new Omicron Variant of the COVID-19. In a press conference, the Health Minister, Jean-Yves Duclos made the announcement, saying the ban announced in November was placed to slow the variant and buy some time from Canada.

“While we recognize the controversial nature of such a prohibition, we believe it was a necessary measure to slow the arrival of Omicron in Canada,” Duclos said.

“But with Omicron now spreading within Canada it is no longer needed,” he added.

Countries affected include Nigeria, Zimbabwe, South Africa, Lesotho, Namibia, Mozambique, Egypt, Malawi, and Eswatini.

The Health Minister noted that the pre-entry testing requirement was mandatory for entry into the country and will take effect from December 21, 2021.
