United States President, Donald Trump may have concluded plans to scrap the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrival (DACA), a programme that protects young undocumented immigrants from deportation while also providing work and study permit for them.
According to Politico, President Trump made his decision known in a conversation with House Speaker, Paul Ryan on Sunday. He urged Ryan to draw up legislation within six months to replace DAKA.
The report disclosed that though Ryan opposed the decision, the President would make a public announcement on the matter on Tuesday.
The report quoted Ryan as saying "These are kids who know no other country, who were brought here by their parents and don't know another home."
Apart from Ryan, former Democratic Presidential candidate, Hillary Clinton has also opposed the planned scrapping of DACA. On Sunday she tweeted "Thanks to Dreamers' courage & resolve, #DACA has allowed thousands of young people to contribute to our society. We're better for it."
Also, Bernie Sanders has cautioned Trump against the move. "If Trump decides to end DACA, it will be one of the ugliest and cruelest decisions ever made by a president in our modern history."
DACA is a United States Immigration Policy introduced by Barrack Obama in 2012. The policy was structured to allow certain illegal immigrants to remain in the country after receiving a renewable two-year period of deferred action from deportation and eligibility for work permit.
Currently, the policy is protecting over 750, 000 people from deportation and provides them work permit. Beneficiaries are usually below the age of 30, having submitted their details to the Department of Homeland Security. These beneficiaries are called 'Dreamer Immigrants'.
