The Global Health Fund yesterday disclosed that it needs about $14 billion to with the fight against AIDS, tuberculosis, malaria and also end other deadly obstinate epidemics, NAN reports. Peter Sands, the Director of the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, TB and Malaria also announced that there is a three-year cycle fundraiser targeted to save about 16 million lives, which is half of the deaths from those three diseases.

He added that money raised will be used enhance health systems in poor countries to enable them to handle existing disease outbreaks and also cope with potential new epidemics.


According to him, if no effort is made in the fight against these bedevilling diseases, lives will continue to be lost.


Sands noted that in 2017, tuberculosis killed 1.6 million people making it among the top 10 causes of death worldwide.


Malaria kills almost 500 people annually, mostly infants and children, while about 37 million people are infected with HIV, which 15 million of them cant access the antiretroviral drugs.


He, however, said it is quite difficult encouraging international donors to pledge funds towards the cause, but mentioned the great impact it would make on affected nations if their governments invest in the fight.
