The World Health Organisation (WHO) has announced that it is set to declare Nigeria a polio-free country.
The announcement was made on Tuesday in Abuja by Ms. Charity Warigon, Media and Communication Expert, WHO Nigeria, quoting Mr. Clement Peter, the Officer in Charge (OiC) who stated that the country in two months would be three years polio-free.
Peter explained that if there are no wild polio ceases reported in two months, Nigeria would be three years free of polio and could be certified polio-free once necessary documents are submitted to the regional commission in the first quarter of 2020.
He attributed the feature to political will and acceptance of vaccines by communities, also urging for better funding, primary healthcare and improving disease surveillance across the country, particularly for those affected by the insurgency in the Northeast.
The OiC said the government's efforts to fighting the scourge played a major role in curbing the health challenge.
