The National Population Commission (NPC) in conjunction with the Federal Ministry of Health and other developmental partners are set to commence collection of data from all households to ascertain the real cause of under-five years' child mortality across the country.

A report of survey formerly conducted by the commission indicated that the mortality ratio among children zero-five years of age shows 132 death in every 1000 live births, with Northern part of the country taking the lion share of 80% of the total figure.


While addressing the press before commencing the exercise in Kano, Barr Bimbola Salu-Hundeyin, who is the Acting chairman of the NPC, expressed worry over the ugly incident, he urged stakeholders to sensitize members of their various communities to corporate with the official while conducting the exercise.


Represented by the Federal Commissioner, NPC Kano state, Dr Isma'ila Sulaiman Lawan, the NPC boss disclosed that his office is optimistic that the data to be obtained from the survey “would be a veritable tool for policy makers and other stakeholders in carrying out their work, design and implement programmes that will go a long way in curtailing neonatal and child mortality in the country.”


Alhaji Bashar Mahe Alu, the Dallatun Kano, who represented the Emir of Kano at the press briefing called for collaborative efforts on all stakeholders across Kano to create more awareness to achieve the aim of the exercise, saying it is for the betterment of all since it is targeting for national planning and for the health sector.


The exercise is expected to be rounded up by 18th December 2019.
